Invictus by William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

William Ernest Henley

A Psalm of Life

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)

A PSALM OF LIFE

WHAT THE HEART OF THE YOUNG MAN
SAID TO THE PSALMIST

TELL me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream ! —
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real ! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal ;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way ;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle !
Be a hero in the strife !

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant !
Let the dead Past bury its dead !
Act,— act in the living Present !
Heart within, and God o'erhead !

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time ;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate ;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

insights about rin van winkle

Rin Van Winkle

Insights:
After I’d read the Rin Van Winkle by Irving Washington . I realized that it gave an ideas about time, trust, and family. You can relate and see your own self in the story.

First, it gave us ideas about time, especially to these people who doesn’t care about it. We all know that time is gold and life is short. We should enjoy every second of out life. We should do things that will be memorable and that we can cherish when we grown up. I remember the book of Mitch Albom Tuesday with Morrie wherein Morrie Schwartz said that we are all going to die but nobody believes it. If we believe, we should do things differently. He is definitely right because if we think we’re going to die, we will do things at our best as if it was our last mission. We can relate this statement with the story happened to Rin Van Winkle. He woke up 2o years after without doing anything. He wanted his time doing nothing. Therefore, we should spend our time doing meaningful things in our life because time never last. Everything will come to its end.

Second, it gave us ideas about trust, how important this word is? Trust is one of the factors that is needed in building a good foundation in a relationship. Can you fully trust a person you don’t even know? Of course not! But in the story Rin Van Winkle trusted and joined the old man and he drunk a liquid and woke up 20 years after. We can conclude that we must not trust a person who we don’t know.

The third idea was the family. It is the smallest unit of the society. A family is composing of a father who is a provider for all the essentials needs of the family. The mother is responsible for taking care of the household activities and her children. The children are the one who make colors in the life of a family. But how can you call a family wherein there is irresponsible father? Can you called that a family. The mother and the children will surely suffer. In the story, there is a twist because Rin Van Winkle is kind and rice with his neighborhood but when it comes to his family he forgot his responsibility. From that scene, I can conclude that a member of a family should be responsible with his/her commitment. It is not bad to do good deeds with other people but it is bad to do nothing for the sake of your family.

In addition to this ideas, I can say that a person deserve a second chance. Comparing in the end of the story where Rin Van Winkle live together with his child. I think he must do things that he forgotten or being responsible to it.

From the story of Irving, Washington we can extract different ideas and interpret it in a different way.

health workers or NPA workers

Last Tuesday February 6, 2010 the military arrested 43 suspicious health workers at
the farmhouse in Morong Rizal. This 43 health workers are suspected to be the
members of the New’s People Army in Rizal. According to Army Spokesman Lt. Col. Marcelo Burgos Jr, The NPA would attack this coming march 29 wherein the will celebrate their founding anniversary. The NPA may also disrupt the 2010 May elections.

The relatives and non- government organization denied that the 43 health workers are part of the New People’s Army. But in the farmhouse the army saw some of deadly weapon and explosives devices including landmine. Some of the workers admitted that they were part of the NPA.

The Commission of Human Rights Chief Leila de Lima said that they had found out that the workers had been subjected to mental torture through long hours of blind folding and saying that the army’s would kill the detainees including their love ones.

In direct contradiction to this, Lt. Col. Burgos denied that the 43 health workers suffered in mental torture while detained in Camp Capinpin. He also added that the detainees were given clothes, food, water and bed.

In some evidence we can conclude that some we guilty because they already admitted that they were part of NPA. But it will go to a legal process and the right of the detainees should be always put first.

driving you crazy

“whoever wants to be great must become a servant.” mark 10:43

What drives your life crazy? Your goal in life? Your dead lines? You are striving hard in your jobs so you can be promoted. You are doing well in your studies so that you can graduate with flying colors. You are doing these things to help your parents with their lives today. And you also want to buy luxury things for yourself like cars, a mansion, and modern gadgets.

Is this your purpose in life? We always live with the expectation of others and it’s hard to meet those expectations. But do we have time for ourselves, friends, family and God the greatest gift you can give to anyone is your time. But how can you do it if you are busy achieving your goals in life and busy living with these material things as goal? Relationships are what life is all about. We need to enjoy our life on earth because life is temporary only. These material things are not important especially when we enter the kingdom of god. He doesn’t expect us to perfect.

Don’t hurry!! Enjoy life and live it to the fullest. Our life does not revolve around materials things that make us happy temporarily. We were created for something much better. This is not our purpose in life. We should spend our time wisely. Have time with God because a spiritual relationship is better as it will last forever.

When you love what you are doing no one has to motivate you. Unlike achieving your goal in life you are motivated by your family. If you serve and live with God, he will give you what you deserve.

Get Ready

I have been part of school paper writings since high school. Being an editor-in-chief I’ve always dreaming to come up with the best school publication. When I entered college, another writing opportunity has come on my way. Taking a course like editing and translating, creative writing, and campus journalism help me to ameliorate my writing skills.

On my campus journalism class we were given three different official student newspapers. From these three newspapers we are going to differentiate and compare it according to its content and style.

Reminder I am just going to criticize these three newspapers without any discrimination. Am just I expressing my idea and opinion of what I had read

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Manila (PLM) school publication focuses more on the political events happening in our country. They provide efficient information to the news so it became substantial. One news was to long I think it may is shortened. I had found one news that was so hard to understand. I think the writer must elaborate or make some further explanation of what he was talking about. I had found this news entitled “Justice delayed is justice denied”. He has a good introduction as well as the last words. He relates one thing to a real life situation. The uses of words are simple enough to be understood by the reader.

The GUIDON is the official school publication of ateneo de manila university. I found many words that I don’t even understand. From this news you can imagine and see how an atenista think and express their ideas. They also wrote about the maguindanao massacre. They didn’t just focus on the events happening inside their campus they also wrote some news about the happenings in our country. Aside from that I can say that they hardly work out to come up with this kind of publication.

The VARSITARIANS is the official student’s publication of the University of Sto.Tomas. I can say that the writers of this publication are very audacious. They are brave to face any criticism. Especially this news entitled “religious, but mot moral” this writer fought with his school bravely by writing this kind of news. Another writer caught my attention this was Emil Karlo dela Cruz who wrote “Brother looking out for his brother”.
He has a great introduction. If you are going to read the first line you are going to put your cheek up with a pride. But suddenly when you turn you eyes to the second line you will feel embarrassment.

The three publications have a different style in writing their own news. There are different characteristics of writers. They face it’s fearlessly. Every person is unique in their own different way. Despite of this they just doing their jobs, the call of their profession.

I hope that the University of Makati is ready to come up with this kind of publication.
Am just wondering what title will it have??

AdEPT

AdEPT? Advance English Proficiency Training. Is this really helpful to our profession? Someone may say YES and others may say NO.
YES, because it will train our students to be more competent enough in delivering our second language. It will offer us supplementary training and learning. The said training will contribute to the progress of our students especially ENGLISH majors. It will enhance our skills when it comes to listening, speaking, writing and reading. It will also give us opportunity to work in a call center company. We II- A English are going to be a future English educators so therefore AdEPT will lead assistance in achieving our goal to be the best English teacher among the rest.

In contradict to that, someone may say NO. In my own opinion it is not timely because we English majors have a full load of 26 units. We have our major subject that we should focus on. I hope that they understand our situation as a student. They should offer that Training with the 4th year students so that when they graduated from the University they can speak the language confidently.
Another question on my mind was AdEPT is an elective subjects so we can conclude that the participants are not force to attend in the training session. And it’s not an accredited course and the grade will not appear in our transcript of record. Do we allow finishing this training? I don’t think so.

What is the main purpose of this program? Maybe we have our own opinion and idea to this issue. You may agree with me or you contradict this. One thing that I knew, AdEPT will help us in some matter despite of our hectic schedule.
