insights about rin van winkle

Rin Van Winkle

Insights:
After I’d read the Rin Van Winkle by Irving Washington . I realized that it gave an ideas about time, trust, and family. You can relate and see your own self in the story.

First, it gave us ideas about time, especially to these people who doesn’t care about it. We all know that time is gold and life is short. We should enjoy every second of out life. We should do things that will be memorable and that we can cherish when we grown up. I remember the book of Mitch Albom Tuesday with Morrie wherein Morrie Schwartz said that we are all going to die but nobody believes it. If we believe, we should do things differently. He is definitely right because if we think we’re going to die, we will do things at our best as if it was our last mission. We can relate this statement with the story happened to Rin Van Winkle. He woke up 2o years after without doing anything. He wanted his time doing nothing. Therefore, we should spend our time doing meaningful things in our life because time never last. Everything will come to its end.

Second, it gave us ideas about trust, how important this word is? Trust is one of the factors that is needed in building a good foundation in a relationship. Can you fully trust a person you don’t even know? Of course not! But in the story Rin Van Winkle trusted and joined the old man and he drunk a liquid and woke up 20 years after. We can conclude that we must not trust a person who we don’t know.

The third idea was the family. It is the smallest unit of the society. A family is composing of a father who is a provider for all the essentials needs of the family. The mother is responsible for taking care of the household activities and her children. The children are the one who make colors in the life of a family. But how can you call a family wherein there is irresponsible father? Can you called that a family. The mother and the children will surely suffer. In the story, there is a twist because Rin Van Winkle is kind and rice with his neighborhood but when it comes to his family he forgot his responsibility. From that scene, I can conclude that a member of a family should be responsible with his/her commitment. It is not bad to do good deeds with other people but it is bad to do nothing for the sake of your family.

In addition to this ideas, I can say that a person deserve a second chance. Comparing in the end of the story where Rin Van Winkle live together with his child. I think he must do things that he forgotten or being responsible to it.

From the story of Irving, Washington we can extract different ideas and interpret it in a different way.
